You stare at it every day. It lurks silently but tells you everything that you know. When studied, you learn the underlying math behind what always seemed to be an abstract art.
To me, typography becomes the most subversive form of communication. What you read is dictated by what occurs between the lines... how the lines are formed and why. Text is innocent but its form is not.
Words say one thing but how they occur say another.
Its subtle manipulation
and I'd like to think that it's mind control.

tabla rasa- latin for "blank slate". Theory traced from Aristotle but largely dismissed until 1000 years later. John Locke proposed that the human mind is born completely blank without any predisposed content and that the individual is composed entirely as a product of ones' environment.
ambient media- A term now largely associated with advertising, Ambient media is message that takes on the form of its' surroundings. Ambient media acts to define a media environment and communicate information in pervasive environments. Subliminal messaging.
pierre pinoncelli- a performance artist made mostly famous for breaking and urinating on 2 of the 8 orginal copies of marcel duchamps "Fountain" sculpture (urinal, dada). the provocative performance was said to be a statement that the piece had lost its original value as provocative art. he showed a strange sense of commitment to this idea by preforming the acts over the course of 13 years. he was also noted to have thrown red ink on a french minister of culture, cut off part of his finger for an art exhibition, and rob a bank for 10 francs with a sawed off shotgun.

ICAS field trip to the park across the street from monument national for our boxed lunch break. (11 countries in one quaint little park.)

while trying to find coffee during the break, i encountered six times the total crap.

poutine is of course the quebecian street fare and therefore naturally my dinner.

next day of icas meetings, we had dimsum at an overzealous restaurant. considering my table consisted nearly entirely of vegetarians, we ended up with "baby squid". the liquid is tears from the sadness and suffering milked gently from the babies.

then I saw GAS. those who know, yeah... i saw GAS. those who don't, I'm not ashamed that I fell asleep 3 times... that's what he's after.

then there was the real commencement. boulder is rolling about 20 deep at this point. we all met up and entered the party collectively. Unlike anything Ive ever experienced at an event before, we were striped of our belongings (my camera included but later recovered... pix 2 come) and placed before a wheel of chance. The wheel determined which color of suit you were to wear for the night... one of the 3 primaries. With each color suit, you were assigned a room, an attitude, a behavior, and a mentality for the night... difficult to explain but so is mutek... you just sort of have to be here.

Welcome to Montreal.
Everyone asks questions in french and answers are in english. The languages meld together like my speech and sware words. After the introduction party tonight, Mutek has proven itself to be quite the international celebration. Sitting at a table, I was lost in over 5 languages... as far as I could discern. At dinner earlier, I sat with three men: one from serbia, one from poland, and one from germany... tomorrow will welcome more. Tomorrow, talks of music and arts will be expanded substaintially though as we dolve into methods to "uphold the cultural value of music and sound creation in both an absolute sense, and in the multifarious forms that meld music and sound with other cultural practices." Perhaps these conversations will put the thoughtless goodtimes to ensue into perspective. Regardless, something here is happening that is not happening. People are listening to others who think, live, and love in completely diferent ways and places and considering how they can apply those differences into their own personal forms for the better of all. Worth the trip thus far.

Validation of Existence: A Comparison between my dog and my self.

Being home a few days with some serious face time with my dog as well as my own life, I've made some astounding observations as to what drives my self and my dog to get out of bed in the morning. Here is a list starting with Django.

Sticks:

Believe it or not, Django is evn more elated about them than this guy.

Empty bottles:

This site alone would cause a conniption fit. Every mans trash is a dogs treasure.

Poles:

This one is sure to get him going. A pole acts as an invaluable place to urinate. For me, when I'm outside and I have to go, just about any where will do while Django on the other hand will endue hours of presumable suffering to find just the right pole. I find this confusing but perhaps the chosen images proves that man and dog are not so different after all.

Balls:

Surprisingly enough, a ubiquitous image of a ball is difficult to find.
This is a ball. This is also the key to my dogs heart. In possession of this object, you are in complete control. If you have this, he is your best friend. If he has this, well, maybe find a stick?

Moving objects:

Moving objects are limited to the type portrayed in the image above. Cars, people, bugs, other dogs, and even air will do. Nothing gets him moving like other moving things.

Tierra firma- I understand every word. I'm back home... but not quite.
Remaining weeks of South America fled quickly. Between rambling down the coast of southern Chile, bike riding in Bariloche, and milking the last of the exchange rate in Buenos Aires, my mind remains fixed on Boulder. The friends, the mountains, and the dog have beckoned me since the day I left more than 6 months ago and finally, they are within reach.
A flight from Buenos Aires to Panama City to LAX has tangled me into a somambulating zomby. Between the 15 hour flight, the mid-night arrival, and 6am final connection to Denver, Kait and I drifted uncontrolably into slumber for 15 minutes too long.
So here I wait, only an extra 3 hours for the next flight home. Can't wait speak to be understood and to rekindle the life I left behind 6 months ago with a few sparks I struck up while I was away.
I'll see you all soon.

I made a trip over to the famed recoleta cemetery, resting place of Evita Peron and every other street name in the city of Buenos Aires. I shot black and white with a red filter. Black skies and white angels. After a week of intensive photoshop work, these shots speak volumes to film. Each camera, lens, film stock, and filter brands each image with something that software cannot replicate.

for those of you who don't know, kait moved down to buenos aires with me. here is a portrait of us together one cool summer evening.

We've just been having the greatest of times.
This week were have been put in charge of designing and making 100 shirts for the upcoming Festival Buen Dia- a city/nation/continent wide gathering of artists. My concept is to silkscreen grids onto shirts to promote interactivity with the product. Give the kids shirts and markers, see what they make.
I got a picture in a Danish magazine today. that was cool. ill scan and post tomorrow.
We also have a hipster christmas tree. more on this soon.

I first happened upon GOOD magazine a couple of years ago at a Whole Foods in Paradise Valley.

Since then, I have been reading any issue of this magazine I can get my hands on. Besides looking good, this magazine uses aesthetics functionally to simplify an infinitely complicated diametric opposition. What is GOOD? See here this recent presentation of FDR's New Deal. The graphic representation not only delivers the history, it illustrates the story conceptually. Good=good.

You can take a 45 minute trip via subte/bus and run into someone you saw 45 minutes ago on the opposite side of town... by shear odds... keep walking and then run into them AGAIN on the other side of town.

Today i went down to ave. florida to help clay find camping gear for patagonia when i happened across Nim aptly in a cross walk across 9 de julio/oblisco... busiest intersection in the city. he was going one way, i the other. stopped, said hi, continued... no big deal, it happens. 3 hours later, same thing happened... hour away.

remindes me of camping rule #1.
If you get lost, stay put.

I have lived the past 4 days without spending more than $10 (35 pesos).
Hopping subtes, eating rice, drinking tap water, taking calls, not making them (incoming calls are always free... literally and figuratively.), making the coffee at home, packing snacks, walking the 20 blocks instead of hoping on the bus, and not indulging.
Time + energy = money.
walk the blocks, make the meals, cut the fat, teach yourself, entertain your thoughts with ideas... don't buy the book- write it.

Do you think you could go three days without spending any money?
Not to say spending money is bad, but is it necessary?
A concept frequently overlooked and underrated.

Lots of musings:
What would I do if I got hit by a car down here?
What would I do if I had gotten my computer/camera/passport stolen (happened to a friend of a friend yesterday)?
What would I do with my last $10?

I'd probably hit it Kerouac style and buy means for sandwiching because with low blood sugar, I feel like I'm living in a Samuel Beckett novel.

The past two days I have been sick.
There is nothing more helpless than a full plate and a stomach ache.
Today, I am well partially if not entirely thanks to the pleasure of taking in a house guest: Guille aka Nim. Nim is a stout vegan. Since he has been in the office/my current residence, we have shared the past 5 meals... all of which were liquado de verdura o frutas. Translated, vegetable and fruit smoothies.
Nim insisted that we pour our bounty immediately into the blender... I will never doubt him again. Turns out, Nim is also a chef. We had blended raisins and iced coffee, strawberry, spinach, and yeast, carrot, cucumber, and avocado... the list goes on. Its cheap, easy, healthy, and la bomba.

Furthermore, I have been learning exponentially more about myself when put into certain situations. Case in point, finding an apartment in a megametropolis in a foreign land. Given the current and projected state of our economy, I will be searching for many more temporary rentals in my life and now I shall carry with me the skillz to get it done. No matter what country you are in, haggling is legal.

Kait arrives in a week.

Kait takes a very advantageous approach to expressing the essence of me in this illustration. Instead of taking an outdated and easily defined style, she opted to tackle "me" from a "post-modern" perspective (i shouldn't have to explain this to you). As most must and all shall soon know, I am a fantastic dancer, or rather, it is my alter-ego Dan Rambles. With the right combination of rock and cocktails, I become Dan Rambles: International Dance Floor Sensation. What you see here is a unique dance move "The Drunk Down Charlie Brown". Coined by one Mr. Rambles and aptly named and portrayed here by Ms. McNally, kait manages to capture the entire florescence of my dancing and the essence of Mr. Rambles/Campbell wholly in a single frame. Bravo kait, bravo.
